FED: More choice for parents in children's education - Howard

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD has reaffirmed the federal government's commitment to a
policy of giving parents more choice in the education of their children.

Visiting Emmanuel Anglican College in the northern New South Wales coastal town of
Ballina, Mr HOWARD's dug a small hole with a silver shovel symbolically starting work
on a $3 million science and technology building.

He used the photo opportunity to highlight his government's support for the right of
parents to choose where their children go to school.

He says it's the right of parents to decide the environment in which their children
will be educated, whether they go to a government school, a systemic catholic school,
or any other form of non-government school.

The prime minister says the government's policy is not a negative judgement on public schools.
