Fed: Ruddock defends handling of stowaway

CANBERRA, Feb 20 AAP - Immigration Minister Philip Ruddock today defended the handlingof an Iraqi stowaway believed to be locked on board a merchant ship for some weeks.

Mr Ruddock said he was seeking more details about the case but was confident immigrationprocedures were followed.

The ABC reported the Iraqi man stowed away on a merchant ship in Iran that was headedto Australia. The man was discovered at sea.

The crew tried to offload him to immigration officials in the West Australian portof Dampier but departmental officials insisted the Iraqi had made no refugee claim.
