Qld: Young boy honoured for saving family from fire

BRISBANE, Aug 25 AAP - A four-year-old boy who saved his family from a fire in their
home was honoured by firefighters today.

Brisbane pre-schooler Callum Brown alerted his parents to a fire in the kitchen last
Friday as smoke quickly spread through their house at Sunnybank Hills.

The family had returned home after a day at the Brisbane show and had gone to bed with
the stove accidentally left on.

Callum yelled at his parents to wake up and soon afterwards the house's smoke alarms sounded.

He also went to the bedrooom of his eight-year-old sister Shannen and woke her.

But he was unable to wake his other sister, Tarra, 10, who had fallen asleep on a sofa
near the kitchen.

His father, Russell, used a wet towel to put out the fire in the kitchen and picked
up his daughter as fire crews arrived.

Callum was today paraded in front of his pre-school friends in a junior fire-fighter
outfit and was presented with a certificate for his bravery by the Queensland Fire and
Rescue Authority (QFRA).

The QFRA has also praised the actions of a 12-year-old boy, who rescued his family
of six after a fire broke out on a lounge chair in a guest house at Mt Isa.

Trent Corbet (Corbet) put the fire out with a fire-proof blanket which he found in
the guest house.
